Unexpected Results

I understand that researching family history, genealogy, and DNA results, can reveal unexpected surprises including previously unknown family members or secrets that were not part of the original research question.

Likelihood of Success

I understand that discovering the identity of close biological relatives is not always successful at the time of searching. Success depends on how many and how close my current DNA matches are, whether genetic networks can be formed, my ancestral origins (geographic regions; endogamous populations), success in identifying anonymous matches, availability of family trees, access to required historical records, and a number of other factors. Searches sometimes stall while waiting for useful matches.

Downloading DNA Data (optional)

I may require assistance downloading my DNA data file from my DNA testing account. If that need arises, I give Louise Coakley permission to download it on my behalf. Louise will email the file to me to save, and then delete it from her files afterwards. I will download my DNA data myself.

Uploading DNA Data (optional)

I may require assistance uploading my DNA data to other genealogy databases or third-party DNA tools. Details, uses and consents required for any uploads will be explained prior to each upload. If that need arises, I give Louise Coakley permission to upload my data on my behalf. I will review the relevant Terms of Service (links below). I will upload my DNA data myself.

Sharing DNA Results

I consent to sharing my DNA results with Louise Coakley. I allow Louise to add notes and create custom groups, where available and if needed, to help organise my DNA matches into family branches or groups. Sharing instructions will be provided. [Notes and groups can be easily changed or removed later. I understand that I can downgrade or revoke my sharing at any time.]

Outreach

I understand that although genetic genealogists are experts in identifying biological relatives using DNA, they are not trained counsellors and therefore they do not normally contact DNA matches or close biological relatives on behalf of clients. This also avoids the risk of ruining what might be the client's only opportunity for contact. Genetic genealogists encourage clients to make first contact with close biological family, or seek advice from a post adoption support specialist, mediator or counsellor. The genetic genealogist may be engaged to, or offer to, write a report for the client to forward to their newfound family explaining how DNA was used to identify them and how target testing may be used to confirm the hypothesised relationship(s).
