Online consulting sessions connect the genetic genealogist with the client for interactive consultations or coaching online – via computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone.
Screen sharing enables personalised and interactive training and experiences.
Sessions may be recorded for the client’s later use (optional) and for quality control.
Client Checklist
If you haven’t already submitted a client information form containing background information about your genetic genealogy question or problem, doing that now will save time during your consultation.
Please also submit the client acknowledgement & consent form beforehand, so the genetic genealogist is aware of your consent preferences and any items needing further explanation.
Don’t forget to add your scheduled consultation time to your calendar or diary, and/or set reminders in your phone. Appointment times are in VIC/NSW/TAS time, so if you are in a different time zone, convert the AEST/AEDT time to your time zone.
Be prepared with your DNA account logins, email account logins, family tree or genealogy account logins, adoption documentation (if relevant), family and/or other information that you think might be helpful.
Online Tips
Consultations are conducted online using Microsoft Teams. You will receive a meeting link with instructions by email once your appointment is confirmed (it is similar to Zoom, where you just click the link to join at the scheduled time).
Although screensharing works fine on smartphones and tablets, it is preferable to use a laptop or computer if you have one, so that you can more easily view the content of the large screens.
Find a quiet area and minimise noise so the consultant can hear you clearly. Consider closing apps/windows that you are not using. If you have limited or slow internet, avoid streaming music or movies elsewhere in the house during the consultation.
Please don’t attend the interview while driving or in a car… book it for a quiet time when you are at home or work so you can concentrate properly without noise, distractions, and danger. If something urgent happens on the day, let me know so we can reschedule.
If you lose your connection at any time during the consultation, don’t panic – just click on the link again to re-join the meeting (I will still be there, and if I continue what we were doing at the time, it will be on the recording).
